Dubbelgården

This hot pot is absolutely broth taking.

If you have been around (South)East Asia a little bit, you will most likely have stumbled onto Hot Pot. Basically a social gathering where friends/family come together over a steaming broth and a buffet where they all make their own food in a way. Since I used to live in Asia myself, I found Hot Pot to be quite the remarkable social event - and very vegan friendly. Dubbelgården on Hisingen brings Hot Pot to Gothenburg. Let’s have a go!

You will find Dubbelgården at Gustaf Dalénsgatan, so pretty centrally located on Hisingen. Easy to get to by bus and plenty of parking next to it. When entering, you will see a big place with plenty of tables. You know, they are ready to serve a lot of people!

The signature point of Dubbelgården is Hot Pot. A buffet where you have one pot of broth per person at your table that you can heat up with the integrated cooker plates. So, if you go on a date night, each will have their own pot with a broth. The point is though to have a variety and share. Thankfully, Dubbelgården has quite many vegan broth options, even if it’s not indicated clearly. Sichuan pepper, thai coconut, vegan broth and a vegan chicken broth are available to choose from. Next to Hot Pot they also have a la carte, but we don’t do that around here. 299 SEK/person is the price tag, so we took the vegetable broth and thai curry.

And then it’s up to you to make it happen. If you know nothing about Hot Pot, bring a friend who can guide you, but the staff is also helpful if you ask them. In essence, there is a large buffet of raw ingredients. Plenty of vegetables, noodles, tofu - and of course meat, but we are more interested in the former. You can either boil it up in your broth, or ask the staff to make a stir fry out of your selection.

On top of that, you can mix your own dipping sauce, but they also give some helpful hints what works well if you are unsure.

Only downside, mostly there is no labelling on the ingredients, so it can be hard to tell what is vegan if you are not familiar with Asian ingredients.

So, how was it? Definitely a nice throwback to my time in Asia. It’s difficult to really judge a place like this, as essentially you make your own food, but I am impressed with the vegan selection, the broths are alright, and if you know what you are doing, you can have a fantastic time. My recommendation: get silken tofu, thai coconut broth, your favourite vegetables and rice. And then add the spicy mix sauce topped with garlic and coriander. It’s a great combo!

But all in all, I did enjoy my time and will definitely come back.

The Verdict

Dubbelgården brings Hot Pot to Gothenburg. While it can be overwhelming when you are not familiar with it, the staff will help you - or bring a seasoned friend. There are four vegan broths, plentiful of vegan ingredients to choose from and you can ask to get your plate stir-fried as well. Only downside is the lack of labeling of ingredients which can be frightening if you are unfamiliar. But if you want to have a large buffet that is vegan friendly, this is the place to be. As someone who lived in Asia, I love the throwback to the social gathering that Hot Pot really is, so I’d recommend giving it a shot - but bring an experienced friend for the first time!
